About FREE10RUNNING

What is Free10Running?

This running event format was conceived by three individuals: running coach Tetsuhiko Kin, Takeshi Nishimoto of Ekiden News, and Yasuhiro Oshima of the Tokyo Marathon Foundation (formerly a division director at the Japan Association of Athletics Federations). Unlike traditional races where everyone starts together, this event allows participants to run and finish independentlyโ€”friends simply run and then meet each other at the finish area.

The goal was to create a race that eliminates the fear of a DNF (Did Not Finish) or the anxiety of being โ€œtoo slowโ€ and inconveniencing others. It is all about running freely.

Participants are free to choose their own starting locations and routes; only the finish time and the finish area (or finish line) are fixed.

Runners use a running app on their smartphones. Any app is acceptable or use the Free10Running app (TBD) to navigate toward the finish area.

Pace is entirely up to the individualโ€”whether running fast, walking, running with a dog or child, or stopping at a shop along the way. You can even hop on a train if you get tired! If you plan to run at a slower pace, simply start earlier to ensure you reach the finish line on time.

While we have a goal that participants should try to cover a distance of 10km by the time they reach the finish lineโ€”tracked via a smartphone running appโ€”every other aspect is flexible: the starting point, start time, route, and running pace are all up to the individual. Each runner plans their own journey from the start and aims for the goal at their own speed. It is much like the experience of battling cancer: starting points and paces vary, yet everyone shares the same finish line and finds renewed vitality.

Free10Run Culture Rules

Free10Run Culture Rules

๐Ÿƒ

Run in small groups

No groups larger than 6 people. It keeps the energy light, the roads safe, and the run personal.

๐Ÿšฆ

Obey road rules

Crossings, signals, footpaths. You're responsible on public roads. Run like a responsible adult.

๐Ÿ‘•

Wear the run color

Each event has a color. Wear it. It's the only thing that marks us as a group on the road.

๐Ÿ‘

Help others

If someone is struggling, check on them. We look out for each other โ€” that's the whole point.

๐Ÿ

We all finish together

This isn't a race. There is no DNF. There is no winner. Fast or slow, we all cross the line together. That is the goal.

๐ŸŽ’

Carry what you need

Bring enough water and snacks to get going โ€” but the route passes plenty of places to restock along the way.

๐Ÿป

Arrange gatherings

Set up a mid-run meetup, a konbini stop, an after-run drink. We give the destination; you draw the path.

๐Ÿ“ธ

Take pictures

The finish line is the destination. Capture it. Share it. Show people what the city looks like at running pace.

#๏ธโƒฃ

Share your run

Post your run, your crew, your city. Tag #FREE10RUNNING. Always respect privacy in permitted locations.

๐Ÿšƒ

Take the train

Seriously. No shame. If it gets too hard, jump on the train and we'll see you at the finish line anyway. No runner left behind.

๐Ÿฅ

Carry health insurance

Bring it. You are responsible for your own wellbeing. Stop immediately if you feel unwell.

๐Ÿ’ง

Eat, drink & fuel up

Stop at a convenience store, grab a drink, sit down for a snack. The route is your playground.
